Since our primary charitable focus is on Hearing , we supplement our support for International Hearing Dog, Inc. with hearing tests conducted at various times during the year, by sponsoring International Hearing Dog, Inc. as an affiliate organization, by publicizing our annual gift of a hearing dog to a deserving recipient-normally in the Colorado Springs area.

On July 13th an e-mail came from Jo Anne Peak saying a woman was in need of a hearing dog, shortly there after a phone message was left from the Ascension Church in Pueblo concerning how to arrange for a hearing dog for a parishioner. Well, after a number of phone calls the situation became clear. Signe Esposito’s hearing dog, Maxie, had recently died and she desperately needed a replacement. As it turned out Monument Hill had presented Maxie to Signe in 1989.

Valerie Foss-Bruger, President of International Hearing dog said they had a dog, Freckles, that could be ready for Signe in a couple of months. Now it was a mere matter of raising the funds. The Ascension Church committed to $3500. Two Pueblo Sertoma clubs, Mesa and Sunrisers committed to a total of $1000 and Monument Hill’s Board approved $500 so we had the funds.

A little before 10:00am On Monday September 8th, Bob Cooley and Freckles from IHDI, along with Franklin Payne President, Irene Weeks of Mesa, David Osborn, President of Sunrisers, Reverend Ephraim Radner from the Ascension Church, a reporter from the Gazette, Channel 5/30 reporters and Benny Nasser showed up on Signe’s porch. The pictures tell the rest of the story. Signe was beside herself with joy and happiness and so was Freckles. You may wonder some times why we work Bingo and other fund raisers, but all you have to do is see how we really make do make a difference in a person’s life and it all becomes worth while. I have invited Signe to visit our Club and share some stories about Maxie and to let everyone meet Freckles. Hopefully she will accept and let the rest of the Club share in her joy and see the difference we have made.
