----Carrie Hare DSC
Scribe: Tony Trifiletti

Today's presentation was provided by Ms. Carrie Hare, the program Director, for the Disability Services of Colorado (DSC).The mission of DSC is to provide exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities. To do this DSC has many and varied programs. They provide support groups for stroke, polio and epilepsy suffers. They have an extensive program to aid children with autism through a program entitled P.L.A.Y. This program provides training and support for families and caregivers of children 18 months to 6 years of age in their own homes. A Senior Dental program and an Aviation program for at- risk teens are also provided.

Of most interest to the SERTOMA audience were the Audiology and Sign Language programs. DSC is the heart of our HEARS outreach. They provide screening and evaluations as well as dispensing hearing aids and hearing aid accessories. An important adjunct to these efforts is their classes on American Sign Language. DSC was formerly part of the EASTER SEAL organization but has recently severed their affiliation to better serve the people of Colorado. We look forward to continuing our association with this wonderful organization.

The event will be held at "Belly Up" in Aspen and will feature "Beatlemania", a group that performs like the Beatles. Members are invited to attend the event (with a silent auction) or to donate to the Aspen Camp, a non-profit organization which offers year-round outdoor experience to deaf and hard-of-hearing children. • Phil Zara reiterates the need for HEARS couriers as discussed in today's presentation by Carrie Hare. He also says that he still has HEARS pins available.
  • Donald Johnson announced a very successful fundraising by means of the Super bowl boards. Donald says $5200 was raised for Int'l and an additional $450 by pins. The last board was numbered today by a frightening, unexpected method involving two masked terrorists, obviously berserk, who assaulted the audience with machine guns (spewing ping pong balls). After gathering up the spent ammunition, it was found to be numbered and was utilized in finalizing the boards. Well done, Denny and Warren!
  • A luncheon will be held for the Int'l President at the Mosaic Restaurant at noon on Feb. 18. There will be a choice of two prices. For $20 there will be a choice of soup/salad plus a choice of one of two different sandwiches and a luncheon salad. For $12 you can have a luncheon salad. Taxes and gratuity are included.
